| One of the joys of researching a guidebook is to discover a
"jewel" of an inn - it is rather like a treasure hunt. Rarely though do we
find an excellent hotel which we have not heard of previously. However, the Country
House, located on a small lane less than a kilometer from the lower gates into Assisi, is
just such a find. The inn is actually an ancient peasant's cottage which Silvana Ciammarvghi, the owner, has lovingly restored and transformed into a small pensione.
It is not surprising that the hotel is so loaded with charm, for Silvana loves antiques and has an eye for beautiful wooden chests, tables, chairs, mirrors and beds. In fact, the first floor of this inn is an antique shop. Most of the furniture in the house is for sale but, no problem: when a piece is sold, another takes its place from the shop downstairs. All of the rooms have style and taste. When we first discovered the Antichita "Three Esse" Country House it had just opened, and each time we visit we find more improvements. Rooms are now available in a new wing overlooking the terrace, but our preference is definitely for those in the original farmhouse which we think have more character and pretty views overlooking the countryside.
One asset never changes, the gracious owner, Silvana Ciammarvghi, who will be there to greet you. She speaks excellent English and will be happy to welcome you to her "home" which is an ideal location for exploring Umbria.
