Explorama Lodge

Located on a small tributary of the Amazon called Yanamono, about 50 miles by boat from Iquitos, the Lodge offers large palm-thatched buildings with individual rooms and separate bathroom and shower facilities connected by covered walkways. As the original of the Explorama facilities, the Lodge has a 32 year history of providing guests with an authentic experience in primary (virgin) Amazonian rainforest.

Basic excursion from Explorama Lodge:

  • Hike on the "Lake Trail" through lowland rainforest which is seasonally flooded. The distribution of plants here is different from that found on higher trails. During high water months, canoes enter on walking paths.
  • Hike on the "Bushmaster Trail" through higher, non-flooding rainforest. Scientific studies by the Missouri Botanical Gardens have found the world's highest biodiversity of trees per square hectare along this trail. The variety of plants, birds and insects found here is unrivaled. This area includes extensive trails of varying duration of walking.
  • Afternoon excursion by dugout canoe along the Amazon in search of freshwater dolphins and just to enjoy the river by open boat.
  • Walk along the local river trail, paralleling the Amazon, stopping to visit the ribereños homes along the way.
  • Night excursions walking or by canoe to look for caiman, nocturnal birds, insects and mammals, but most of all to enjoy the sounds of the rainforest at night.
  • Full-day trip to the Manati River, a black water tributary of the Amazon, fishing for piranha, looking for freshwater dolphin, stopping at a local village and school, and swimming.
