Unspoiled white beaches and the land gently sloping to the sea, combined with beautifully forested hills, persuaded many people to visit and stay, among them, Guido Marx, a mathematics professor of Stanford University. He decided to purchase a couple of lots in 1903 and built a "summer cottage" for his family. It was finished and occupied by 1905. Together with many other faculty members of Stanford, Camino Real was to become known as Professors Row. Most of those structures were wooden frame, shingled buildings, executed in the prevailing California Craftsman style. The 1906 earthquake in San Francisco brought a tremendous influx of escapees from the bay area, many of whom decided to stay on in town. The Marx family eventually rented out rooms to other faculty members, as well as university students and out of this original bed-and-board became Carmel's oldest guest house. Alterations to the Holiday House structure were done through a succession of owners, each one improving the conveniences, yet trying to retain the inherent charm and cozyness, which is in the mode of a "European Pension".
Holiday House became a favorite retreat of Californians approximately 80 years ago and still keeps on offering hospitality and a charming informal home to visitors from far and near. We are located in a quiet residential section of town just a short walk to the beautiful white sands of Carmel beach or the famous art galleries. Quaint shops as well as fine restaurants are within easy walking distance. However, should you decide to explore the area by car, the spectacular Big Sur coast, Point Lobos State Park, the 17-Mile Drive with its world famous gold courses, Pacific Grove, Monterey's Cannery Row, Fisherman's Wharf and the highly acclaimed Aquarium are all within a 35 mile radius. |

| The home is stiuated on a hillside facing toward the beach. Dormer windows are poking out in all directions and create that cozy, hidden-away feeling, reminiscent of grandparents attics, with all their charm and mysteries. Holiday House is keeping with its original spirit of simple, warm comfort. Find games in the living room, choose a book from the well stocked library, sit in front of the fireplace and chat with fellow travelers. We offer six rooms, furnished with antiques, quilted spreads and very comfortable beds, cutely tucked away under the roof. Some rooms face the ocean, others our well maintained garden. Four rooms have private baths, two rooms share, but are quite spacious and ideally suite for family or friends travelling together. Fresh flowers cheer you up once you enter, settle in, relax and on cold days a fire cracles in the living room. A full buffet-style breakfast is ready for you each morning from 8:30 - 9:30 in the living room and the aroma of coffee blends in perfectly with the crisp clean tan of the ocean air. Treat yourself to a memorable experience by spending a few days with us on the Monterey Peninsula in Carmel. |
