The land on which The Rock Cottage sits was was granted on June 11, 1895 by President Grover Cleveland to Nancy L. Doolin as part of 154 acres. This occurred via the Homestead to Actual Settlers Act of 1862, and the fact that the Grantor was a woman was unusual for that time. It is believed that Nancy built the cottage around the turn of the century to comply with the homestead patent. Originally it was a two room structure without plumbing. One room (now the living room) has a wood burning stove for heating and cooking. The chimney skill exists on the roof and a bookcase now occupies the place where the stove pipe traveled. The second room was used as the bedroom. Nancy married W.H. Brese and moved to Buleah, Colorado. On August 13, 1910, the Brese's sold the entire 154 acre parcel to J.W. Oliver for a sum of $500.00. On March 26, 1912, a mere 17 months later Mr. Oliver and his wife, Salina Heath Oliver, sold the 154 acres to Alice Brazeal for $1000.00 - a 100% profit. Alice and R.C. Brazeal deeded 40 acres on December 26, 1930 to James Brazeel. An interest in the property was acquired by Henry and Doris hoemaker who, along with Mr. Brazeal, sold the property to Alva Baldwin on February 15, 1937.  The property passed again on November 28, 1945 to Marvin A. Hillhouse. On August 28, 1961 the property was purchased by Fred "Pete" and Monte Ray Rodwell, who moved into the original two room cottage. Pete was a contractor and plumber and was responsible for the addition of the well house, the kitchen, the back bedroom and the bathroom, complete with indoor plumbing. The outhouse is skill in its original location on the property. In 1977 and 1980 twenty acres, including The Little Rock Cottage property, were acquired by Richard (also known at "Pete") R. & Roxie Rodwell. Pete and Roxie built a home on the property, but retained the cottage as rental income property. In 1992, Ken and Carol Shuttleworth took possession of the property. The cottage was used as housing for family members until August 1996, when Carol undertook rejuvenation and redecoration of the cottage and made it into The Little Rock Cottage.

The goal was to make it comfortable without destroying the historic character of this fine old Ozark treasure. Incidentally, in one way this story goes full circle. Carol's grandmother's maiden name was Cleveland, and Carol is a relative of -- you guessed it -- President Grover Cleveland.
