The Post House was built in 1835 by master mason James Blain, and served as the town's post office. This substantial, yet elegantly simple brick residence serves as a touchstone for Niagara's architectural history. Upon visiting The Post house, you are presented this unique and beautiful architecture by the detailed six panel door, with a semi-circled fanlight above and arched surround supported by fluted pilasters (see image at top left of this page). The interior is formed around a center hall, and principal rooms are complete with fireplaces. This includes large windows that give the ample and well proportioned rooms a feeling of airiness. Special, too, is the interior room detail, which shows a preference for symmetrical pilastered trims and corner blocks with foliated ornament. |
